In Your Hands

Birth Comb

The labour aid that helps you put mind over matter.

WHEN YOU'LL NEED IT

As soon as labour starts. It will become more and more useful when the labour sensations have increased and you need to concentrate on getting through each contraction. Put it in your hospital bag.

HOW TO USE IT

Acupressure points are located where your fingers join your palm, and across the middle of your palm (where your ring and middle fingers touch when you make a fist). Place the com in your hand with the comb teeth on either set of acupressure points. Slowly close the palm of your hand, making sure that the teeth of the comb are touching the points and squeeze through each contraction.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT

It helps mitigate pain in three different ways. First, the birth comb teeth are designed to hit acupressure points on your hand when squeezed which releases endorphins. Second, it gives you something to focus on (other than the contractions), and thirdly, it activates the Gate Control theory of pain: the pain from the comb teeth on the hand “gates” the pain of the contractions.

FAQ

How does a birth comb actually work?

A birth comb is a simple pain management tool used during labour. By squeezing the comb firmly in your hand with the teeth pressing into your palm, it creates a strong sensory input that can help distract your brain from contraction pain. It can give you something to focus on during contractions.

What is the Gate Control Theory of pain?

Using a birth comb for labour utilises the Gate Control Theory. By gripping the comb so its teeth press into the acupressure points in your palm (such as the Lao Gong point), you can flood your nervous system with competing, non-painful sensations, helping your brain shift focus away from contractions.

How long should I use a birth comb for?

There's no set time limit—you can use a birth comb for as little or as long as it feels helpful. You may choose to hold and squeeze it during each contraction, then relax their grip between contractions. You can continue using it throughout labour, alongside other comfort measures, for as long as it supports your birth experience.
